In 1984, I moved into the highly competitive, modified midget cars also known as micros . I drove cars built by my dad and the Canaday Bros. of Lathrop, Missouri . We were sponsored by Sonic-Drive In. We won 51 features between 1984 and 1986, and finished runner-up in the points in the 1984 and 1985 seasons to fellow driver and friend Darrin Key. These points races took place in Sedalia Mo. a facility that National Mini Sprint News called" the Knoxville of Modified Midgets"
Pete
White from Sedalia came up with an idea to build a 250c.c. V-twin
engine and with the help of the Horstman clutch company with whom
we had been associated with through karting. We built our very
own engines. We had a little trouble at first with the ignition
system on mine and the other competitors thought it was great
fun beating us.Then Ernie Walker stepped in and built a custom
set of expansion chambers for my engine and the rest was history!
It got so bad that at one point the National Midget Association
outlawed it from competition. That was a pretty neat feeling because
three hillbilly's from Missouri were whipping the pants off the
best the Europeans and Japanese engine manufactures could send
over.
